Blue for Diabetes

“Blue for Diabetes” is a large-scale diabetes prevention and education public welfare initiative launched by the China Council of Lions Clubs in response to the activities carried out by the Bureau of Disease Prevention and Control of the National Health Commission and the Chinese Society Diabetes of the Chinese Medical Association in connection with World Diabetes Day. Focusing on the prevention and control of diabetes, the initiative adopts “blue light” as its unified symbol and carries out a series of public welfare activities integrating public education, free screening, and patient support services. The initiative is committed to raising public awareness of diabetes prevention and control, safeguarding public health, and promoting greater awareness and understanding of diabetes across society. The initiative has attracted broad participation from Lions members and generated a strong social impact.

Aid at Hand

To thoroughly study and implement Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and in line with the guiding principles of the 19th CPC National Congress and of all the plenary sessions of the 19th CPC Central Committee, the China Council of Lions Clubs actively responded to the Ministry of Civil Affairs’ Guiding Opinions on Supporting and Guiding Social Forces to Participate in Disaster Relief Work. Under the guidance of the China Disabled Persons’ Federation and local disabled persons’ federations, the China Council of Lions Clubs has actively integrated resources, mobilized collective efforts, and leveraged its professional strengths and organizational advantages to continuously strengthen and expand its disaster relief services. Through the “Aid at Hand” service initiative, Lions members are organized to participate in post-disaster reconstruction assistance, emergency rescue education and awareness-raising. The initiative seeks to actively contribute to disaster relief efforts, give full play to the role of social organizations, and provide supplementary support to government disaster relief work.

Red for Blood

“Red for Blood” is a longstanding flagship service initiative of the China Council of Lions Clubs, encouraging Lions members to actively participate in voluntary blood donation in response to the national health authorities’ call to ensure the clinical demand and safety of blood supply, while safeguarding the health of both blood donors and recipients. The initiative promotes the humanitarian spirit, contributes to the development of socialist material and spiritual civilization, widely publicizes the importance of voluntary blood donation, and promotes scientific knowledge related to blood donation. ”From me for everyone, from everyone for me; caring for life through voluntary blood donation” is the guiding principle of the “Red for Blood” public welfare initiative.

Public Health Services

Public health security is an important component of the national security system, and the emergency response capacity of grassroots communities, together with public awareness of health protection, plays a vital role in safeguarding public health. Focusing on public health prevention and control and the improvement of public health literacy, the China Council of Lions Clubs has launched the “Public Health Services” initiative. The initiative seeks to build an integrated public health service system combining public education, emergency support, and health protection, with the aim of enhancing public health awareness and emergency preparedness among community residents and contributing to the building of a Healthy China.

SightFirst China Action

In 1997, the Chinese government and the global charitable organization Lions Clubs International jointly launched the “SightFirst China Action” initiative. Over the course of the first three phases, which spanned 20 years, Lions Clubs International contributed US$34.88 million, while the Chinese government invested substantial human, material, and financial resources in parallel. During this period, a total of 548 national medical teams were dispatched, more than 5.2 million cataract surgeries were performed, and 210 county-level ophthalmology departments were established with project support. More than 60,000 grassroots ophthalmic medical personnel received professional training, contributing to an increase in the intraocular lens implantation rate to 95 percent. In 2014, the initiative also helped China eliminate blinding trachoma. The initiative became the world’s largest blindness prevention and treatment program, receiving high recognition from the World Health Organization and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness. It marked an important milestone in China’s blindness prevention efforts, became a model for public health cooperation among developing countries, and laid an important foundation for the establishment of the China Council of Lions Clubs.

The fourth phase of the “SightFirst China Action” initiative was launched in 2023 with a five-year duration and a total investment of US$5 million. The initiative focuses on implementing the National Eye Health Plan during the 14th Five-Year Plan Period (2021–2025) issued by the National Health Commission. Key areas include advancing myopia prevention and control and scientific correction and treatment among children and adolescents, improving the prevention and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, strengthening screening, early diagnosis, and standardized treatment capabilities for common eye diseases such as cataracts, retinal diseases, and glaucoma, and supporting medical institutions in resource-limited areas in order to enhance comprehensive ophthalmic diagnosis, treatment, and high-quality eye health services. The initiative aims to promote the high-quality development of eye health services in China. As of the first year of the fourth phase implementation, the initiative has benefited 10,000 people, with project expenditures reaching 8.56 million yuan.
