Our History
Background
Following China’s reform and opening up, the country’s international standing and influence continued to grow. As a global charitable service organization, Lions Clubs International (LCI) also sought to carry out service activities in the Chinese mainland. Under the framework of China’s foreign-related policies, LCI had successively implemented a series of service projects without any preconditions in China, generating positive social impact.
1997
In 1997, in cooperation with the former Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China and the China Disabled Persons’ Federation (CDPF), LCI  launched Phase I of SightFirst China Action project. Over five years, the project supported approximately 2.1 million cataract surgeries, leading to the first-ever recorded decline in the number of blindness cases caused by cataracts in China. The success of this cooperation laid a solid foundation for the introduction of Lions service in the Chinese mainland.
2002
In March 2002, as a pilot effort to further establish standardized relations with LCI, and with the approval of the State Council, the Shenzhen Lions Club and the Guangdong Lions Club were established as local social organizations in China. The CDPF was tasked with coordinating all liaison work with LCI.
2003 – 2004
In July 2003, the Shenzhen Lions Club joined LCI as the Shenzhen Lions Club of China. In early 2004, the CDPF proposed to further expand the pilot establishment of Lions Clubs in China. Following consultations with the CDPF and relevant authorities, the Ministry of Civil Affairs proposed to establish the China Council of Lions Clubs (CCLC), with the CDPF as its governing body, which would join LCI as a national social organization.
2005
On June 14, 2005,the CCLC was established in Beijing. The Shenzhen Lions Club and the Guangdong Lions Club joined CCLC as group members. On August 1, the Beijing District of CCLC, the first local district under CCLC, was officially established.
2009
The following years witnessed significant expansion and growth of Lions Clubs in the Chinese mainland. On January 13, 2009, the Dalian District of CCLC, the Qingdao District of CCLC, and the Shenyang District of CCLC were approved and established. Later that year, on August 27, the Shaanxi District of CCLC was established. Till then, CCLC had entered a new stage of comprehensive growth.
2010 - 2013
On February 9,2010, the Zhejiang District of CCLC was officially established in response to the growth need in the Yangtze River Delta region, and played a key role in enhancing local public services, On December 19, 2012, the Harbin District of CCLC was established, extending charitable service to China’s northernmost regions. On October 30, 2013, the Sichuan District of CCLC was established, opening a new chapter of service and Lions fellowship in Southwest China.
2015
With the increase of its profile, the CCLC’s tenet of “Elevate Yourself, Empower Others, Enrich Society” has inspired more charitable individuals and organizations to join the public welfare undertaking. The Hainan District of CCLC and the Yunnan District of CCLC were approved for establishment on January 20, 2015, bringing new vitality to charitable service in southern China. On January 26, the Jiangsu District of CCLC and the Jilin District of CCLC were established in succession, marking the further strengthening of CCLC’s organizational system and the initial formation of a nationwide development framework.
